  1. APPLE , MICROSOFT ANNOUNCE CROSS-LICENSE  AGREEMENT FOR
  2. OUTLINE FONT TECHNOLOGY, PRINTER SOFTWARE

  4. SAN FRANCISCO,CA--SEPTEMBER 19, 1989--Apple Computer, Inc.
  5. and Microsoft Corporation today announced a cross-license
  6. agreement for outline font technology and printer software
  7. to be standard across the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft OS/2
  8. Presentation Manager platforms.   Microsoft will license
  9. Apple’s outline font technology for inclusion in future
  10. versions of Microsoft OS/2 Presentation Manager.  Apple will
  11. license printer software from Microsoft for implementation
  12. in future versions of the Apple LaserWriter printer.  The
  13. Microsoft printer software incorporates the Apple font format.
  14.      Apple’s outline font technology was announced in May, 1989,
  15. to significantly improve the quality and flexibility of font
  16. support for the Macintosh.  Now Microsoft will bring this same
  17. open font format to OS/2 Presentation Manager, allowing the
  18. easy exchange of rich text documents between these two
  19. desktop platforms.
  20.      “Apple’s innovative image font technology is emerging as
  21. the foundation for desktop computing in the 1990s,”  said John
  22. Sculley, Apple’s chairman and CEO.  “Users can now take
  23. advantage of this high-quality, standard printing and font
  24. solution on the Macintosh and across other key computing
  25. environments.”
  26.      “Apple has really led the way in enhancing the use of
  27. font technology in desktop platforms,” said Bill Gates,
  28. Microsoft Corporation chairman and CEO.  “Our establishment
  29. of a common font format and common printer software will bring
  30. power, flexibility and standardization for screen and printer
  31. output to the Macintosh and OS/2 Presentation Manager.”
  32.      “Scalable font technology is an essential part of the
  33. rich graphic environment that will characterize computing in
  34. the 1990s,” said Jonathan Seybold, president of Seybold
  35. Publications and Seminars.  “The agreement is probably the
  36. most important development in the computer industry this
  37. year.”

  39. Outline Font Technology

  41.      The outline font format is an open standard that all
  42. hardware, software and font vendors can support.  Nearly a
  43. dozen leading type vendors and as many software developers
  44. have already announced support for this font standard (see
  45. attached list).  Today’s agreement between Apple and Microsoft
  46. means that these type vendors will easily be able to support
  47. both the Macintosh and OS/2 Presentation Manager.
  48.      Apple’s font technology includes the specifications for
  49. a powerful instruction set that controls characters for printing
  50. or screen display at low resolution, while preserving excellent
  51. quality at high resolution.
  52.      Outline fonts are mathematical descriptions of text
  53. characters that allow the computer to accurately display text
  54. at any size on any screen or printer.  Bit-map fonts, widely
  55. implemented in current screen output devices, are device-
  56. specific and consequently cannot be easily displayed on
  57. different devices without severe limitation on memory and
  58. flexibility.

  60. Advantages for Applications Software

  62.      The outline font format will make it easier for applications
  63. to have high-quality output from either the Apple Macintosh or
  64. OS/2 Presentation Manager.  Now, users will be able to purchase
  65. a single font library for both systems and be assured of the
  66. type quality previously available only on dedicated typesetting
  67. and publishing systems.
  68.      “Many people use WordPerfect to do high-end word processing
  69. and desktop publishing on both OS/2 and Macintosh platforms and
  70. require high-quality scalable fonts both on screen and in print,”
  71. said Derrick Shadel, vice president of development, WordPerfect
  72. Corporation.  “We welcome standards like this that provide
  73. consistency across these platforms and are open to a variety of
  74. vendors.”

  76. Microsoft Printer Software Enables WYSIWYG Documents
  77.  
  78.      A standard outline font format for screen output is one half
  79. of the equation for high-quality document production.  The
  80. second half is the availability of standard printer software
  81. that incorporates the same font format as used for screen
  82. output.  This printer software meets both these criteria.
  83.      The printer software is based on source code from Bauer
  84. Enterprises of San Jose, California, acquired by Microsoft in
  85. July 1989.  It is compatible with Adobe PostScript printer
  86. language and has  enhancements for compatibility with OS/2 Presentation
  87. Manager and Macintosh.
  88.      The new printer software provides a high-level description
  89. of a page to a printer.  It accepts input from the host system
  90. and translates it into a series of commands describing which
  91. pixels of the page to mark with ink.
  92.      With its support for the outline font format , the new
  93. printer software enables creation of sharp text of any size or
  94. font type on any printer that uses this software.  As a result,
  95. what the user sees on the screen is what prints on the page.
  96.      Microsoft will sublicense the printer software to third-
  97. party OEMs.  The Bauer Enterprises printer software was
  98. previously licensed to many leading printer vendors, so
  99. Microsoft anticipates that the new software will quickly
  100. gain acceptance in the printer market.

  104.      The outline font  technology announced today will be
  105. incorporated into future versions of OS/2 Presentation
  106. Manager and Apple Macintosh.  Pricing and availability
  107. will be announced at a later date.
